We are all looking for more distance and accuracy with our full swing. A simple and effective way to produce a more consistent, penetrating ball flight is to create more “stretch” in your golf swing. “Stretch” in the golf swing can also be described as ‘extension’ or ‘width’.

A creative way to visualize this powerful concept is to imagine a tight rubber band placed under the ball of the left foot (right-hander) and connected to the grip-end of the golf club.

Start your swing and imagine stretching the rubber band “wide” with your left shoulder turning behind the golf ball with your left arm fully extended. At the completion of the takeaway, your back should be at the target with your arms directly in front of your chest.

A step further than simply using your imagination is to actually acquire a 3 to 4-foot strand of surgical tubing and feel this technique for yourself in real-time!

Here is another great way to feel this technique. Go to the nearest wall in your room or office. Place your palm on the wall with your arm extended shoulder high. This will determine the distance you stand from the wall. Take your address position with your arms folded across your chest and make a full shoulder turn. Then extend your arms and connect your hands like you are holding a club. Your goal is to touch the wall with your knuckles giving you the feel of “width” and weight transfer as you swing back. Practice these drills and you will be on your way to a wider and more productive swing!
